East London rapper/singer InderPaul Sandhu is ready to crossover. His style is remarkably unique. He is creating an empire from the ground up with his hip hop and fashion sensibilities.
Based in London, the rapper is defying the odds by bringing his own unique style to the game. Some of the highlights and achievements he’s made include connecting with Pharrell and having his music being featured on NBA 2K. And I feel this is only the beginning. The BBC featured his single “Money Ain’t A Thing“. The song shows his prowess not only in the rap game but in R&B as well. The follow up single “Compromise” continues the fresh R&B crooning he is known for. InderPaul Sandhu is creating a fresh new look at the hip hop/R&B genre.
Modern Frequency talked to the music and fashion guru about his career, his creativity, and moving his visions to the States.
As a creator, where do you find expressing your art the best—in music or in fashion??
I couldn’t answer this as a creator you know Robert. Its the same for everything essence wise that goes into both styles of creating. The output may be different but the kitchen and drawing board are the same. The only way I could give you a specific answer is from a first love perspective, and music was my first love…me and her we’ve been going strong for sometime now and fashions almost like our child.
What do you have planned coming up in the fashion sector?
Leather boots! I have done an unofficial collab with Dr. Martens and I really liked how they came out, so right now that’s in the pipeline. I’m also going to introduce a few new jewellery items, but the most impressive thing that’s coming is our embroidered leather. Which will be officially out very, very soon. They are very cool.
Where do you find inspiration for your lyrics?
I could give you some real deep, muso kinda answer but its really simple. Life. Adversity has become a great ink to my pen and hindsight being 20/20 does help too.
You envelop soul and rap in an irresistible way. How involved are you in the music side of things?
Extremely involved, I am involved in every part of the process from melody and elements to admin and organizing. It doesn’t just stop at writing or performing. I am my machine. It’s one of my superpowers, I know my process and I am present throughout its entirety.
How did “I’m Sorry” make its way to NBA 2K and who was the song indebted to? (What was the song about?)
The investor behind the label I was signed to at the time owned the 2K franchise, it was a business to business move. Not trying to downplay my achievements or talents, but the placement was disillusioning. Yes, I’ve wrote a dope song and the producer did his thing, the song was fit for purpose but what made the difference was who I knew or who knew me, and all that crap is so anti me. Integrity and merit is a very real thing, sincerity and substance are real currencies that a lot of people don’t have. That being said, the listeners were what made the placement nice, the tune connected with a lot of people man and that’s what made my heart smile. I’d say this song is a cousin to my song ‘Cold’..to my friends, family and parents. In the pursuit of my dreams and my goals, I haven’t really been available and I understand the toll that can have on others. Lord knows it’s had it’s toll on me.
Pharrell and Adidas used the song “Compromise” for their mixtape. Tell me more.
The koolcat dj, Dj Sharad, was commissioned by none other than Adidas for a mixtape they were putting together to celebrate a collaboration they did with Pharell Williams on a select line. After my single ‘Money Ain’t A Thing’ did its rounds around the internet after getting track of the week and month by the BBC, I had a lot of fresh eyes and ears on me. Dj Sharad heard my follow up single ‘Compromise’ and the rest was history. Fun fact, in the graphic I used to promote this I wore timberlands…dont ask me why.
You were born in East London? Who’s next to come out of you neck of the woods?
Your going to judge me for this but I really have no clue, I stay in my own world. I rarely listen to or watch the latest anything, I like to come across things organically. I’ve found I’ve had to be like this to get where I have and become who I am.
When can we expect your visions to hit the United States main stage?
Robert, you are literally the third person to ask me this in the last month I feel God may be trying to tell me something…I’m gonna go with within a year, usually if that many hints have been dropped to me God is up to something and He’s gonna make it happen fast.
I just wanna die empty, I have that tattooed on my chest. I don’t want the grave to get anything other than my physical body, I want to birth everything God has put in me and if I can introduce people to Him that would be a bonus.
