Had a chance to interview upcoming indie band The Moss. The Moss broke through with the four-song Insomnia EP, leading the way with more than 25 million streams, the title track – which lead singer Tyke James describes as “a bittersweet song about codependency, the point in a relationship where you feel incomplete without the other person” — has landed on Spotify’s U.S. Viral 50 chart with major support from Sirius XM’s Alt Nation. Other highlights of the past year include well-received sets at Las Vegas’ Life Is Beautiful and Idaho’s The Festival at Sandpoint.

Now the band is gearing up for their next release called Big Blue Moon out April 24. The band has a Beach Boy meets Mt. Joy sound. The band is on tour criss crossing the nation with a stop in Williamsburg, New York on April 24. Listen to a snippet of Big Blue Moon below and read on for 5 Questions with the band.

Your sound is quite difficult to box in and I love that. I do hear a bit of ska, folk, and alt rock combined in there though. How did you nail down the band’s sound?
Our sounds developed mostly from playing shows. We always looked up to bands that had a classic line up. We approach things with a minimalistic mindset, minimal amounts of the things we like, and 100% of what feels right under we start playing. Our shows have a big influence on how our music sounds.
Big Blue Moon is out April 24. What does this particular project mean to the band?
This is our first complete project in years, I feel like a completely different person from the last time we released an album, it’s been so long. We have been writing and touring the whole time, and growing as people. We love how it came together and are proud to have found a more current version of our music in the studio the past year.
What’s on your rider for the current tour?
We don’t usually get much on the rider, we kinda just go out and buy our own snacks. I will say we have an insidious amount of uncrustable wrappers in our van.
Tell me about your single “Your Way”.
I wrote “Your Way” about a lesson I keep having to learn. It’s one of the main points of the album , because it sorta answers some of the questions from the other songs.
What is next for the band?
What’s next is the rest of our tour, we’ll be out til May 15!
