Austin band Farmer’s Wife is a band you don’t want to miss and it’s time to get them on your radar. Molly Masson, Jude Hill, Derek Ivy, Jacob Masson, and Jaelyn Valero comprise Farmer’s Wife. Alternative rock is making a comeback especially with Farmer’s Wife.
The band’s cover of “Season of the Witch” is hypnotic and spellbinding to say the least. Just in time for Halloween, the band has been playing the song in front of audiences for the past couple of years and Molly Masson’s vocals are epic when the tune hits the chorus.
The rock act has been playing the Austin circuit for a few years now and the band is now on tour with Cloud Nothings. I chatted with hem while on the road about how they acquired their name, their infamous cover of “Season of the Witch”, and their haunting vibe.
Where did you get the band name from?
Jude Hill: We were named Sludge for a really long time and there were other bands named that and that is a genre of metal as well.
Jaelyn Valero: It’s like a farmer’s wife who’s doing witchcraft behind her husband’s back.
“Season of the Witch” adds your flair as a band to it. Did you think it was going to come out as sweeping and epic when you put it together?
Molly Masson: We were playing shows every weekend and it was Halloween at the time about a couple years back. We wanted to play something Halloween at the event we were playing and we were in a spooky mood. We decided to cover “Season of the Witch” and it just came out like that. We all are lovers of Halloween.
JV: Yeah because we were playing so much at that time, we were really focused to see what the audience moved the most. True to where our sound is going to as band.
What appealed to you about Cloud Nothings so much to go on tour with them?
JV: We are really inspired by their music that they’re creating. Their music is very foundational to where we go for and our fans go for. They seem like great people.
JH: We are very lucky to be on this tour. They are very established band and we can go on a tour with them. We are inspired to get to witness a band that has been around for so consistently for so well for so long.
MM: We are soaking everything up and learning so much from them. We are very lucky that they chose us to go on tour with them.
What is special about about Austin, your hometown?
MM: No matter where you go, you can find live music. It’s so accessible.
Where did you come up with the lyrics from “Keep Hate In Your Heart? It comes across as a bit dark.
JH: It started out as a joke. All these artists promote love. It was a joke. Harry Styles keeps promoting kindness—that’s a beautiful message but what about the haters?
Who do you think your core audience is and who do you see coming out to the shows?
JV: It’s a really solid mix. It’s really exciting to see a lot of young women out at our shows—goth aesthetic.
JH: I think one of my favorite things is going into new towns. It’s great to play Austin, don’t get me wrong. It was really special to go to other towns where people appreciate our music millions miles away.
What is next?
MM: We have a couple weeks off after this tour and we want to record another EP and engage with as many other communities as possible. We have some dates lined up for next year.
