Eclectic R&B singer, DJ, activist and producer Erykah Badu spun some tunes off the vinyl reissues off the Fela Kuti catalog at The Box in New York City last night. Kuti was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, musician, composer, pioneer of the Afrobeat music genre, and human rights activist. DJ Reborn opened the set with a throwback of Orlando Julius, Ray Baretto, and Willie Colon & Hector Lavoe and hyped the crowd up to a frenzy. Ohio now Brooklyn based band The National will be releasing their new album Sleep Well Beast this coming Friday September 8. They performed the new material in front of a Philadelphia crowd on September 5. Listen to it in its entirety via NPR here. This is probably one of the most anticipated rock records of the fall. The band has already released four singles to the public pre-release including the lush, aesthetically driven “Carin at the Liquor Store”, which is on top of Modern Frequency’s favorites list.

Canada’s indie rock scene is ever evolving. The freshest sounds are now hailing from Lindsay, Ontario from indie band The Kents. They are helping to shift the scene once again thanks to their Waking EP. Boston-Buffalo based band The Push Stars are back. After a lengthy hiatus of side projects and solo careers, the melodic trio is ready to release their fifth upcoming new album and tour behind it towards the end of 2017. The Push Stars are Dan McLoughlin, Chris Trapper, and Ryan MacMillan. The band’s last effort, Paint the Town, was released in 2004. Their song “Any Little Town” is a favorite of mine and anyone from Buffalo and Boston would definitely know it.
