Lindsey Lomis is on the cusp of becoming this generation’s next big talent. Following in the footsteps of Olivia Rodrigo, Selena Gomez, and Billie Eilish, Lomis has what it takes from her fluid vocals to her musical tastes that she has featured on her upcoming EP Handle With Care. The EP (out 3/29) covers experiences to feelings that she manages to deliver so poignantly. Her music left such an impression on me.
I sat down with the upcoming singer to talk her new EP, growing up in Nashville, and getting cosigned from today’s biggest stars.
Where are you?
I am in Los Angeles.
How did you get involved in the music scene?
I grew up in Nashville. So, I grew up around a music scene constantly and seeing live music weekly. I was singing as long as I spoke. I started taking it seriously when I was nine or ten. I got involved with music camps, open night mic nights, and started taking vocal lessons. I got lucky growing up in Nashville because that jump started everything for me.
Why did you move to Los Angeles?
I moved to Los Angeles about seven months ago. I never went to college and it was the next comfortable next step. I was visiting Los Angeles since sixteen and was here more than my home in Nashville.
Your music is combo of Olivia Rodrigo meets Billie Eilish. Do you consider them musical influences?
I admire them both so much as artists. Billie is such an individual artist, and her songwriting is insane. Olivia Rodrigo has incredible storytelling and been watching her videos of her tour, and she takes on this raging passion.
You’ve been cosigned by SZA to Bieber. How does that feel?
It’s very shocking. SZA is another influence and in awe of constantly. It’s shocking that she’s heard me play and takes the time out to comment. It’s motivation to be honest.
Do you think the music industry is flooded with female pop singers today?
I think the industry has always been flooded with women, but I think just now they are receiving recognition. Even watching the Grammys this year, the majority of the performances were women and most of the nominees were women. It’s wonderful to see that they are finally getting their recognition.
You have created an indie pop and rock sound. Was this intentional?
Yes. It’s interesting I have a blend of all my influences in my music. I love the R&B world and the more soulful vocals and the jazzy acoustic guitar. I love the pop structure and hook. I love indie rock/alternative production influences. I grew up to a ton of different music including Amy Winehouse, Cage The Elephant, Young The Giant, and Adele. I pull from all those different worlds and try not to give myself borders to stick in and experiment when I need to.
Why name your upcoming EP Handle With Care? It seems like there’s vulnerability behind the meaning and in the lyrics.
I felt that represented where I was at the time when I was writing this EP and the songs in particular. I feel like it’s about being honest and vulnerable whether it be a friendship or relationship. I am at this point with a person that I am ready to open up and it’s up to them if they want to handle with me care or not. It’s a very scary thing to be honest.
What’s the song “Stalker” about?
It’s one of my favorites and it has such high energy. I kept the song vague in a sense. I talk about this feeling as being a stalker. For me, though, it’s this insecurity following me anywhere I am going. It can be anxiety, missing your ex, and wrote this song about that and wanted it to be versatile and able to fit into anyone’s life.
What’s your favorite song off the EP and why?
I do love “Long Way Down” because it is very dramatic and has a big feeling. I think the rock guitar hits are new to me. I feel like I am getting the angst out on the track. It’s vulnerable and real and has this desperation to it but you can bop your head to it.
Do you ever read the reviews on your material?
No not really. I tend to not seek out the show reviews, but it gets sent to me. My Dad gets notifications, lol.
Will you be going out on tour soon?
I am going on tour with Jacob Collier. We will do a national tour April through June followed by Europe in November and December.
Lindsey Lomis will be playing a date in New York City at Radio City Music Hall on her upcoming tour.
