Atlanta based pop trio/bro band, OBB, have garnered much attention in the last few years even though they’ve been working hard at it since 2008. Even though they started out as Christian pop, the band is ever evolving into the pop mainstream. We talked about their beginnings, how they’ve grown, and the inspiration behind their lyrics. Upcoming singer songwriter, Matt Maeson, should be on everyone’s musical radar. He not only has signed to Atlantic Records, but has opened up for Bishop Briggs to Mumford and Sons while on tour. He is making quite a name for himself especially with his style of blues and rock. Maeson and his family were like musical nomads as he grew up, reaching destinations–even prisons–to play for. Nowadays he’s playing huge festivals including Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza. He’s earned it. Maeson’s The Hearse EP is out now. Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” is the best video of the year thus far. The video is a well crafted masterpiece that illustrates exactly what is going on in today’s modern society. It could be considered so offensive that it should come with a disclaimer. We won’t give any of the deets away. The video was directed by Hiro Murai, who is known well for his story telling.  If you haven’t seen it yet, shame on you and watch below.

Modern Frequency sat down with alt pop/rock duo, Violet Night. The band is comprised of vocalist/guitaist Connor Pohl and keyboardist TJ Rounthwaite. The band is based out of British Columbia, Canada. Eclectic R&B singer, DJ, activist and producer Erykah Badu spun some tunes off the vinyl reissues off the Fela Kuti catalog at The Box in New York City last night. Kuti was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, musician, composer, pioneer of the Afrobeat music genre, and human rights activist. DJ Reborn opened the set with a throwback of Orlando Julius, Ray Baretto, and Willie Colon & Hector Lavoe and hyped the crowd up to a frenzy. Ohio now Brooklyn based band The National will be releasing their new album Sleep Well Beast this coming Friday September 8. They performed the new material in front of a Philadelphia crowd on September 5. Listen to it in its entirety via NPR here. This is probably one of the most anticipated rock records of the fall. The band has already released four singles to the public pre-release including the lush, aesthetically driven “Carin at the Liquor Store”, which is on top of Modern Frequency’s favorites list.
